  • The Cardinals snuck past the Reds, 2-1, on Thursday.
  • Cleveland was blanked by the White Sox, losing 6-0.
  • The Guardians are 20-13 in their all-time team history against St. Louis.

The Cardinals (23-29) and the Guardians (21-28) match up in an interleague bout. These two teams are heading in different directions, with St. Louis winning, and Cleveland losing, but hoping to change that.

Preview

St. Louis has been scorching hot lately. After starting the season very poorly, the Cardinals have exploded onto the scene. They’ve now gone 13-5 since starting 10-24. Their offense has been a major part of that success, scoring 119 runs in that 18 game span. If they continue to average over 6.5 runs per game, they’ll continue to win games. A soft upcoming schedule offers St. Louis the chance to continue their hot streak.

The Guardians have been struggling lately, having gone 2-7 over their last 9 games, and 8-15 for the past month. They haven’t fallen too far out of a non-competitive AL Central race, so they still have a chance to get back into contention if they can rebound soon. Cleveland’s offense has been awful lately. In their last 5 games, they scored 10 runs and went 1-4. 3B Jose Ramirez is one of the few players producing for them.

Prediction

These teams are relatively close in the standings right now, but that doesn’t tell the full story. Since May 7, the Cardinals have gone 13-5, while the Guardians have gone just 6-10. Cleveland does have the home-field advantage in this game, but I’m doubtful that will be enough to overcome their awful recent play. With a very balanced starting pitching matchup as well, I see the Cardinals coming away with another win here.
