Preview
Chicago continues to heat up, having now won 10 of their last 12 games. Their hot play has allowed them to pull to within just 3.5 games of 1st place in the division. The Cubs will have a legitimate shot to win a wide open NL Central if they continue to play at this level. Two sweeps against the Pirates helped fuel their run, and they’ll now have a chance to maintain their winning ways against another divisional rival.
The Cardinals have been having a very disappointing season thus far. After winning over 90 games and the NL Central division last year, they now sit dead last in the division. St. Louis has managed to win 4 of their last 5 games, but prior to that they went 2-11 over the last two weeks. They need to build on their recent success in order to have a chance at slowing down the Cubs here. Their pitching needs to improve.
Prediction
The MLB was probably hoping that these two teams would be better when they planned out this London series, but at least draw the Cubs while they’ve been playing their best baseball of the season. They’ll have Justin Steele (2.71 ERA) on the mound for this one. He should have a notable advantage over Adam Wainwright (5.56 ERA), who has been inconsistent for the Cardinals this season. I’m taking Chicago to win.
