Los Angeles closed out the 1st half of the season with 4 straight wins. With that streak, they also tied the Diamondbacks for 1st place in the NL West. The Dodgers have won the division in 9 of the last 10 years, and will have a chance to win it yet again if they start the 2nd half strong. They’ll have to take advantage of this series against the Mets, with tough series versus the Orioles, Rangers, Blue Jays, and Reds up after.
The Mets ended the 1st half of the season 6 games under the .500 mark. It’s been another disappointing year for a team that had won 100 games last season. From June 2 to June 30, New York went 6-19, sliding into 4th place in the division. They went 6-2 heading into the break, and are desperately hoping that is a sign of a better July to come. This series with the Dodgers to open the 2nd half is crucial to those hopes.
Prediction
The Dodgers were certainly the better of these teams in the 1st half of the season, but they have a few hurdles to clear. They’re on the road, against a Mets team that desperately needs a good start to the 2nd half. They’ll also face consistent veteran Justin Verlander (3.60 ERA). Despite all of that going in New York’s favor, Los Angeles should still get the win. They are just simply the better team. I’ll take the Dodgers.
