Preview
Philadelphia got swept by the Mets this week, as they continue to struggle. After making the World Series last season, they’ve had a very underwhelming start. The Phillies have gone 10-17 over the past month, and are in danger of falling into last place in the NL East. They need to bounce back in this series against the Nationals. Their offense has been ice-cold, having scored just 3 runs in the series against the Mets.
The Nationals have gone 6-5 over their last 11 games, avoiding falling completely out of contention. They’ve managed to remain in better shape than many of the MLB’s other last place teams, but still have a lot of work to do to get back to the .500 mark. Washington’s win this week against the Dodgers was encouraging, even though they lost the series. Joey Meneses continues to hit well, batting .300 this year.
Prediction:
Washington enters this game as massive underdogs, despite being at home with a similar record to the Phillies. By the end of the season, it’s more likely that Philadelphia will hold the better record, but they haven’t played to that level yet this year. With the capable Josiah Gray (2.77 ERA) on the mound for Washington against Zach Wheeler (3.60 ERA), I like the Nationals chances of coming away with a win.
