Fight Preview
Topuria was out for almost a year due to personal issues. Previously, he smashed Charles Oliveira with a vicious first-round KO to win the vacant lightweight title. That was his third title fight, and the third straight KO victory. Before this contest, he beat Alexander Volkanovski and, later on, Max Holloway. Both of these encounters were in the featherweight division.
Topuria is maybe one of the top three pound-for-pound strikers in the UFC. His incredible boxing and speed are the main reasons the Spaniard dominates two categories simultaneously. Though, we need to add that his grappling skills are fantastic, which is why he has 8 submission victories so far.
On the other hand is the veteran who demolished his rivals with the same devastating recipe. Gaethje had the hardest punch in the division, and some of his KOs are legendary. In 32 fights, he had 27 wins and 5 defeats, of which 20 triumphs came via knockout.
After a let’s say surprising, yet very painful KO loss to Max Holloway at UFC 300 in April 2024, Gaethje had only two bouts. Both were unanimous decision wins, one over Rafael Fiziev and the other against Paddy Pimblett. Therefore, he has enough gas in the tank for five rounds, but we have to admit that his punches are slightly lighter than before.
