Preview

Portland State finished in the bottom half of the Big Sky conference last season, ending just 4-7 on the year. It marked their 7th straight losing season. Since beating FBS Washington State and finishing in the FCS Top 10 in 2015, in head coach Bruce Barnum’s first season, they’ve gone just 21-47. Barnum was brought back for his 8th season in 2023, hoping to break his 7-year losing record streak. It won’t be easy.

Oregon had their 2nd consecutive 10-win season last year, starting to look more like the program that went 60-8 from 2010 to 2014. Following that tremendous stretch, the Ducks had gone just 29-22 from 2015 to 2018. With their big move to the Big-10 on the horizon, Oregon is getting back on track at just the right time. In 2023, they return QB Bo Nix and much of the roster that aided them in their success in 2022.

Prediction

It’s not impossible for an FCS team to beat an FBS team. It happens pretty much every year, very often in the first week of the season. That being said, this isn’t a top-10 Portland State against an above average Washington State in 2015. The Vikings have struggled for several years to be competitive at the FCS level, and Oregon is back in contention for the top of the FBS. This game will be just like their matchup in 2018.
