Match Preview

Arsenal’s chances of winning silverware this season could hinge on their showdown with Newcastle on Wednesday. The Gunners have already suffered an embarrassing exit at the hands of Man United in the FA Cup, while they face an uphill struggle to catch Liverpool at the Premier League summit.

Newcastle were excellent at the Emirates Stadium at the start of last month, and were good value for a 2-0 win. Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the clash, before a second effort was netted in fine style by Anthony Gordon.

Newcastle could reach a third EFL Cup final this week, and they have won each of their last two home matches at this stage of the competition. Interestingly, only two of the last 31 teams that have lost a first leg on home soil have progressed to the final.

The Magpies also sport a very solid recent record against Arsenal, having won four of the last seven. That includes victories in both meetings with the Gunners in 2024-25.

Newcastle’s home record is also worth considering. The Magpies have won their last seven matches at St. James’ Park in the EFL Cup, and have kept five clean sheets over that period.

Newcastle vs. Arsenal Picks

Arsenal’s confidence will be high after a dominant win over Man City on Sunday. We could see the Gunners scoring at least once in this game, but Newcastle’s fine defensive record will ensure that they secure a spot at Wembley Stadium.
