Match Preview

The oldest soccer competition on the planet kicks off its third round this week, as Premier League and Championship teams enter the FA Cup. All teams in the competition will have their sights set on a memorable run to May’s final at Wembley, with Man United winning the FA Cup at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Everton have endured a struggling campaign to this point, and the long-term future of Sean Dyche is already been assessed by the club’s hierarchy. The Toffees come into this tie sitting 16th in the Premier League standings, but they have scored just once across their last four matches.

Peterborough’s season is following a very similar pattern at this stage, as the Posh sit toward the bottom of the League One standings after 24 rounds of matches this season. They come into this FA Cup tie after going four without a win, and losing three times over that period.

This week’s clash in the third round of the cup is only the second time that Everton and Peterborough have locked horns. The only previous clash came in the EFL Cup in 2006, with Everton recording a 2-1 win.

Meanwhile, the Toffees will be looking to overcome a poor recent run in the FA Cup after winning just once in their last five matches in the competition. However, Everton boast an excellent record against lower-ranked teams, progressing from 14 of their last 15.

Everton vs. Peterborough Picks

Peterborough haven’t won in their last 14 ties against top-flight opponents in the FA Cup third round. That is a worrying trend against Everton this week, despite the Toffees and their ongoing issues in the Premier League. The smart money will be keeping faith with the home team.
