Match Preview
France’s bid to win a home gold medal in soccer continues on Monday, as they compete in the semi-final stage against Egypt. Thierry Henry’s side have been excellent to this point, as they have won all four matches that they have played without conceding a goal.
Their dominant record was maintained in a heavyweight clash against Argentina in the previous round, with the French securing a 1-0 win to book their spot in the final four. The winning goal in that clash was netted after just five minutes, as Jean Philippe-Mateta headed home the winner from a corner.
It would be fair to say that Egypt have upset the odds at the Olympics this summer, as they topped a competitive looking Group C above Spain. The African nation have won two of their four matches inside 90 minutes to this point, and they are still yet to lose a match in regulation time.
Egypt showed excellent character to come through their quarterfinal showdown against Paraguay on Friday, as they netted with just two minutes remaining to send the game to extra time. Their place in the final four was secured after winning 5-4 in the shootout.
France vs Egypt Picks
Egypt has defied expectations to reach this stage of the competition, and they will be hard to write off in the final four. However, we find it challenging to overlook the clear claims of the host nation.
