Betting Glossary

If you’re going visit offshore sportsbooks, you need to know the basics about betting. At least basic terms. Why? Because not knowing what certain words mean is a one-way ticket to losing money.

The terminology in 2026 is a bit different than in the past. It evolved, and for that, we have to thank crypto. That’s why we made a list of the most important terms and phrases every newcomer should know about.

The Essentials: Basic Betting Terms

These are the bread and butter of any sportsbook, domestic or offshore. Remember, these are a must-know.

TermWhat it Actually Means
The SpreadThe “handicap.” The favorite has to win by more than this number; the underdog can lose by less than this number and still “cover.”
MoneylineA straight-up bet on who wins the game. No points, no handicaps, just the W.
The Total (O/U)Betting on whether the combined score of both teams will be Over or Under a set number.
Juice / VigorishThe “tax” the bookie takes. Standard juice is -110, meaning you bet $110 to win $100.
The HookThat annoying half-point (e.g., -7.5). It ensures there is no “push” (a tie).

The “Pro” Lexicon: Advanced Terminology

Once you start moving beyond casual $10 bets, these terms will appear in your environment more often.

1. Sharp vs. Square

  • Sharp: A professional bettor. These guys move the lines. When a “Sharp” puts $50k on an underdog, the sportsbook panics and changes the odds.
  • Square: The casual public. Squares usually bet on favorites, home teams, and “the over” because it’s more fun to root for points.

2. Closing Line Value (CLV)

This is the ultimate metric for success. If you bet a team at -3 on Tuesday, and by kickoff on Sunday the line is -6, you have massive CLV. You beat the market. Even if you lose the bet, over the long run, consistently getting better numbers than the closing line yields a profit. It simple math and probability.

3. Reduced Juice

Offshore books like BetOnline sometimes offer Reduced Juice or Lower Vig (e.g., -105 instead of -110). It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a 50% discount on the bookie’s fee. Do know that in the long run, reduced juice is the difference between a winning season and a losing one.

The Crypto & Offshore Specifics

Since these are crypto sports betting website, there are a few extra terms that fresh bettors have to know.

  • Rollover (Wagering Requirement): The amount a player must bet before withdrawing the bonus funds.
  • Example: A $100 bonus with a 10x rollover means you must place $1,000 worth of total bets before cashing out.
  • KYC (Know Your Customer): The process where a book asks for your ID. “No-KYC” books let you play anonymously.
  • Confirmation: When the blockchain verifies your Bitcoin deposit. Most offshore books need 1 or 2 confirmations before your balance updates.
  • Public Fade: Betting against the majority of the public. If 90% of people are on the Cowboys, “fading the public” means you’re betting on the opponent.
