“The Open Championship” (often just called “The Open”) is the oldest and most prestigious golf tournament in the world.

It is one of the four Major Championships (the “Super Bowls” of golf).

The “British Open” vs. “The Open”

Here is the most important thing to know to sound like a pro:

  • In the US: We almost always call it the “British Open” to distinguish it from our own “U.S. Open.”
  • Officially: The correct name is simply “The Open.” (Golf purists will correct you if you say “British Open!”).

Key Facts to Know:

  1. Where: It is always played in the United Kingdom (Scotland, England, or Northern Ireland) on a specific type of course called a “Links” course.
  2. When: It is the final Major of the year, played in July.
  3. The Trophy: The winner receives the Claret Jug, arguably the most famous trophy in golf.
  4. The Style: Because it is played on the coast, weather (wind and rain) plays a huge role. It is often much slower and lower-scoring than American golf.
