The French Cup, or the Coupe de France, as it is better known is the premier cup competition in France. It has been the biggest cup competition in the country since 1917, and all clubs in France are able to enter; including amateur sides. The final is typically the final game of the domestic season and takes place from the Stade de France, with the winning team awarded a Europa League place for the following season.

French Cup Format

The French Cup is very unlike any other domestic competition in the world. That is because the higher-ranked team are forced to play away from home. The random draw also means that there is a possibility of potential banana skins along the way. However, despite the advantage that the lower-ranked sides have, only two teams have reached the final since professional football was introduced. Calais RUFC achieved that feat in 2000, while Les Herbiers VF matched that in 2018.

There are no replays in the competition, which means that extra time and penalties may be required to separate sides should there be a draw at the end of 90 minutes.

French Cup Winners

Aside from the two amateur sides that have won the competition, there has also been two clubs from outside the top division in France to claim success. Le Havre won the competition in 1959, while Guingamp achieved their success in 2009. Paris Saint-Germain have recorded the most wins in the competition with 12, while Rennes are the current holders of the French Cup. They won the competition at the end of the 2018/19 season by beating Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

Year Winning Team Losing Team Score
2018-19 Rennes PSG 2-2 (A.E.T) Rennes won 6-5 on penalties
2017-18 PSG Les Herbiers 2-0
2016-17 PSG Angers 1-0
2015-16 PSG Marseille 4-2
2014-15 PSG Auxerre 1-0

Betting On The French Cup

There are a number of different ways to place bets on the French Cup, and they are separated into ante-post and individual match betting options.

Ante-Post Betting

The best way to bet on the French Cup is by staking money on the team that will be crowned the champions. The odds will constantly alter throughout the season so punters will have to find the right time to get the best possible price. Should the team that you have staked your wager on win, then you will be given the returns. There is also the possibility to place an each-way wager, which means that you could get returns should your team finish second.

Individual Match Betting

  • Match Result- The best way to bet on the outcome of a match is by placing the stake on the team that you believe will win. Should the side that you have staked on win the match, then the returns will be rewarded. It is important to remember that games that go to extra time are settled as a draw.
  • Both Teams To Score- If you didn’t want to bet on a specific team to win, then you could instead wager on whether both teams to score. Punters will either wager on yes or no. If you place your wager on yes, then both sides in the match must score for the bet to be a winner.
  • Over/Under Markets- One of the best markets for value is betting on whether there will be more or less goals, corners or cards than the benchmark set by the bookmaker. For instance, the benchmark may be set at 2.5 goals. If the punter bets on over, then there must be at least three goals for the bet to be a winner.
  • Handicap Betting- The gulf in class between two teams in the French Cup could be huge, and that is where the handicap market is useful. The fancied side will start at a disadvantage that they will need to overcome in order for the bet to be a winner. For instance, if PSG starts a game with a handicap on -2.5 against Auxerre, then they will need to win by at least three goals for the bet to be a winner.
