When Did The Gatorade Shower Tradition Begin?
The first Gatorade Shower was held after the New York Giants beat the Washington Redskins in October 1964.
Jim Burt was the ring-leader, along with Harry Carson, in the first Shower, acting as somewhat of a revenge tactic on head coach Bill Parcells, who had been pushing the nose tackle hard in training.
The Showers were a common theme connected to the Giants throughout the 1984 and 1985 season, and were a habit throughout the Giants’ Super Bowl-winning campaign in 1986, with every victory marked by a Gatorade Shower.
The term officially came into use the following season, as CBS broadcaster John Madden highlighted the Gatorade bucket. This led to the energy drink company gifting Carson and Parcells $1,000 in gift certificates.
