Fight Preview
For the fourth time in his career, Floyd Mayweather will come out of professional retirement to step back into the ring. His opponent in September will be a familiar foe: Manny Pacquiao. The two previously squared off in May 2015, with the bout setting records for being the highest-grossing PPV event in history.
However, just as it was eleven years ago, there is a sense that this rematch is coming too late for boxing purists. In fact, the first bout arguably took place a few years later than many would have dreamed of, with both Mayweather and Pacquiao being past their prime.
Still, there will be enormous interest in the money-spinning sequel, set to be streamed to a global audience on Netflix.
Mayweather hasn’t fought professionally since August 2017 when he extended his perfect professional record with a straightforward TKO win over MMA star Conor McGregor. The American has won 27 of his 50 fights inside the distance, but five of his last six wins have come via decision.
Pacquiao has vowed to inflict a first professional defeat on his long-time rival, and it could be argued that he should come into the rematch sharper, having been more active in recent years. His latest bout came back in July of last year, fighting to a draw against Mario Barrios in a bout for the WBC Welterweight title.
