Event Preview

As has become tradition, the curtain on the Formula 1 season will come down in the day-night race hosted at the Yas Marina Circuit. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been staged annually since 2009, and it has produced some of the most dramatic conclusions to the campaign.

Among those include a thrilling three-way finish in 2010, and the hugely controversial final lap shootout between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in 2021.

More drama looks to follow this weekend, as three drivers remain in the hunt to be crowned world champion. McLaren appear to have cost Piastri his rightful chance after a questionable strategic call last weekend saw him drop to third in the standings. Meanwhile, Verstappen was the big winner, climbing up to second and within 12 points of Norris following the Brit’s fourth-place finish.

Everything will be decided in Abu Dhabi. Norris continues to lead the way with 408 points, and he will be crowned champion on Sunday regardless of any other results if he finishes in the top three. If Norris finishes outside of the top three, he will require Verstappen to not win the race. Meanwhile, if he suffers a DNF, he will need both the Dutchman and Piastri to finish off the podium.

Verstappen is the four-time reigning champion, and he will need to win the race to stand any realistic hope. In order to be crowned champion for a record-equalling fifth straight year, he will also need Norris to finish off the podium.

Piastri’s chances appear to be very slim following last weekend’s team disaster. The Australian will need to win the race, and then hope that his teammate finishes sixth of lower.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Picks

Experience in high pressure environments could be key for what is likely to be a mesmerising final round of action in F1 this season. Max Verstappen’s dominance in Qatar last weekend bodes well for his chances, while he has won four of the last five editions of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
