Event Preview
The Chinese Grand Prix made its welcome return to the F1 calendar in 2024, with Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri winning the last two editions. Lewis Hamilton holds the all-time record for race wins with six, and Mercedes is the leading constructor with six victories.
This weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix will cover a total of 56 laps, ensuring that a race distance of 305.066 km is covered. Oscar Piastri showcased the importance of qualifying at the Shanghai International Circuit last year, topping the time sheets on the Saturday before converting that position into a win.
That could bode well for Mercedes, who already appears to have a huge advantage over the field in terms of one-lap pace. That was reflected in Melbourne last weekend, with George Russell finishing nearly a second clear in qualifying. Kimi Antonelli will be aiming to put pressure on his teammate, and a first win for the Italian can’t be ruled out.
Ferrari and McLaren both endured teething problems with their 2026 cars, with the latter looking like the fourth-fastest car on the grid. Ferrari’s biggest issues center on their electrical systems, especially in Lewis Hamilton’s car. However, there’s no denying that the car has race pace, suggesting they will be competitive as the season progresses.
Teams with bigger problems include Cadillac and Aston Martin. Both look set to be toward the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship in the opening rounds. Meanwhile, Red Bull will be hoping that Max Verstappen can get to grips with his 2026 car after crashing out in qualifying.
Chinese Grand Prix Picks
Mercedes holds a clear advantage over the chasing pack at this stage of the season, which will make them difficult to bet against in China. Therefore, George Russell looks like the standout selection.
