Event Preview
An exciting weekend of Formula 1 action is set for Brazil. Before the action in the full-distance Grand Prix, a first points-scoring opportunity of the weekend will come in the form of the Sao Paulo Sprint Race. The format has been used in every edition of the race since the Sprint Race was introduced in 2021.
Lando Norris won the half-distance race in 2024, while other previous victors in the Sprint format at Interlagos include Max Verstappen, George Russell, and Valtteri Bottas.
The grid for the Sprint will be formed on Friday. Like Grand Prix qualifying, the Sprint Shootout is formed of three sessions, with the five slowest qualifiers being eliminated in the opening two rounds, before the top ten on the grid are determined in the final round.
Given the close nature of the Championship battle, it will be a vitally important weekend. Lando Norris leads the Drivers’ Championship by a point after regaining top spot following success in the Mexican Grand Prix. Oscar Piastri lost ground in the battle after being forced to settle for fifth, marking the fourth straight race in which he has failed to finish on the podium.
Ferrari could have an excellent chance in the Sprint race this weekend, as the car has excelled in the short-distance races throughout the season. The car has also looked more competitive in Grand Prixs since the summer break, with Charles Leclerc achieving podium finishes in the last two rounds.
Sao Paulo Sprint Race Picks
The Sprint format encourages overtaking, meaning that the race should be a thrilling event. However, Max Verstappen’s record in the short-form races speaks for itself, and he has won the last two Sprint Races in the United States and Belgium.
