Event Preview
One of the oldest events on the DP World Tour schedule is set for this weekend, as Madrid hosts the Open de España. The field this weekend will compete in the stroke play event across 7,112 yards, with the par 71 featuring a lucrative purse of $3.25 million.
Jon Rahm appears to be the logical starting point when assessing the leading contenders. As well as having home field advantage this weekend, the Spaniard has been in excellent recent form after playing a starring role in Europe’s Ryder Cup success. Rahm is also a three-time winner of the Open de España.
Joaquin Niemann has also been a proven winner this calendar year, achieving notable victories on the LIV Golf schedule. His form has continued on the DP World Tour, which includes a notable showing when T20 at the BMW PGA Championship last month.
Shane Lowry’s consistent form has once again caught the eye this season, and the Irishman will still be riding a wave of adrenaline after scoring the winning putt in the Ryder Cup. David Puig will also have leading claims, as he bids to become the fourth Spanish winner of the Open de España in five years.
