Event Preview

The exciting FedEx Cup Playoffs get underway in 2026 this week, as TPC Southwind hosts the St. Jude Championship. This stroke play event has been staged since 1967, but it has been a part of the FedEx Cup since 2007, with only the top 70 ranked players involved.

Scottie Scheffler will be a red-hot favorite to win the Playoffs this season, and he should be well-rested after bypassing the Wyndham Championship last weekend. The American has won just once on the PGA Tour this season, but he has accumulated 16 top-25 finishes, and has made the cut in all but one of his 17 appearances.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy will also be back in action this weekend after finishing T40 at The Open Championship last month. The 37-year-old has hit somewhat of a lull in the season after winning the major title at Augusta, but he typically excels in the Playoffs, meaning he should be respected.

Cameron Young looks set for a good run in the Playoffs this season, hot on the heels of finishing as the runner-up at The Open. Young has successfully made the cut in all 17 appearances this season, and is a two-time winner.

Matt Fitzpatrick and defending FedEx Cup champion Tommy Fleetwood should both be respected, while Chris Gotterup appeared to play himself back into form when T18 at The Open.

Xander Schauffele typically enjoys the test posed by this Tennessee course, finishing two shots off the lead in 2024. Hideki Matsuyama should also be respected after winning the St. Jude Championship two years ago, along with a runner-up finish in 2021.

St. Jude Championship Picks

Each of the last four winners of the St. Jude Championship have been priced up at odds of +3000 and bigger, meaning that it could be worth taking a chance on a player at a price.

Viktor Hovland is one that attracts appeal, having beaten Scottie Scheffler in a playoff at the Travelers Championship three starts ago. His form is eye-catching, having also finished third at the Canadian Open this season. Course form is a big plus, and Hovland was runner-up at the St. Jude Championship in 2024.
