Event Preview
The Players Championship is one of the most important events in the first three months of the calendar year, and is widely considered to be the fifth major on the PGA Tour. All of the top-50 ranked players in the world will be in action, competing for their share of the $25 million purse.
A total distance of 7,189 yards will be covered at TPC Sawgrass, with the par-72 course record being held by Greg Norman, who finished 24-under with an aggregate score of 264 in 1994.
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy both appear to be leading contenders based on previous experience, with both stars winning on two occasions. McIlroy comes into the round as the defending champion after holding his nerve to win in a playoff in 2025.
J.J. Spaun typically excels at TPC Sawgrass, finishing second in the event 12 months ago. His recent form would be a slight negative, but a return to Florida could spark the American back into life.
Corey Conners also achieved a top-ten finish last year, and the course certainly suits his style. The Canadian has been in reliable recent form, making the cut in his last three appearances. His best performance so far this season came in the Hero World Challenge, finishing seventh.
The Players Championship Picks
Akshay Bhatia could be a player worth following this weekend. The American has been in consistent form on the PGA Tour, and his confidence should be high after excelling in the opening two rounds at the Arnold Palmer. Has solid course form to his name, finishing T3 12 months ago.
