Race Preview

The feature on a staked day of action at Santa Anita on December 28 comes in the form of the G1 American Oaks. This race covers a distance of 1 ¼ miles on the turf, and it has attracted a field of eleven fillies in 2025.

Ribbons is a very likable contender for the Leonard Powell yard, having recorded a second career win on her latest start, achieving a career-best Equibase speed figure in the process. She’s progressive, but is yet to be tested in stakes company despite making six starts.

Cliffs is a two-time winner in 2025 for trainer Cherie DeVaux, and she made a striking impression with her smoothness in progressing through the race when winning at Churchill Downs last time. However, she has form to find based on the figures.

Take A Breath showed plenty of promise in handicap company in the UK earlier this season, before finishing fourth in the G1 Del Mar Oaks. Has since disappointed, but a return to that level of form this weekend could see her get competitive.

Cliffs could also out-run her odds after showing flashes of promise on the track in North America. After finishing sixth in the G1 Del Mar Oaks, she won an allowance optional claimer at Santa Anita before finishing fifth in the G3 Autumn Miss Stakes.

American Oaks Picks

Atsila brings respected Grade One form to the table this weekend on her stable debut for Richard Baltras. The three-year-old was a decent sixth in the G1 Sun Chariot Stakes, and was third in the G1 Matron at Leopardstown, finishing behind the impressive Fallen Angel on both occasions. Has form with some of the best European fillies, and that ensures that she won’t be far away this weekend.
