Belmont Derby: Betting Preview
The featured race on the card at Saratoga this weekend is for horses aged three, and it is run on the turf. A talented field has been assembled for the 2026 Belmont Derby, including two notable contenders from Europe.
Pacific Avenue headlines the leading contenders. The Charlie Appleby raider has won twice from nine starts under rules, but will need to show improvement now up in distance after finishing third in the G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas. Yet to fire in five attempts in stakes company.
Bottas could be an interesting contender on his second start after a break, while Third Coast did show some ability on his most recent start for the Thomas Proctor yard. West End Kid has already shown his ability at Saratoga this summer, landing the G3 Pennine Ridge Stakes by a comfortable length from the re-opposing Blackmail.
Touch of Fire should be respected for the Brad Cox yard after a striking win when beating the re-opposing Tiernanogue by three lengths in the Audubon Stakes at Churchill Downs. Further improvement is plausible.
Simon & Ed Crisford-trained Title Role is arguably the most interesting European raider. The three-year-old by Too Dart Hot has won three from six starts on the turf, and he holds a win over Pacific Avenue at Meydan earlier this year. The distance is the only concern this Saturday.
Belmont Derby Picks
I’m a big fan of the Cherie DeVaux-trained Remember Mamba this weekend. The three-year-old was the best horse in the G1 American Turf Stakes, but a luckless run meant that he could only finish second. Expected to resume winning ways after previously landing a stakes success at Keeneland in early April. Bred for this distance, and the sire produced 2019 winner Henley’s Joy.
