Race Preview

The Black Eyed Susan Stakes forms the middle leg of the Filly Triple Crown, and there will be a big field of runners lining up this weekend. Bob Baffert hasn’t landed victory in the race since 2013, and he holds a strong chance of ending that wait this weekend. She has won on all five career starts, including on her previous effort over 1 1/16 miles when landing the G2 Santa Anita Oaks. That performance scored a speed figure of 89, and she is undeniably the top-class act in this field.

However, the highest rated horse in the field comes in the form of Balpool for Rob Altras. This three-year-old has been in excellent form this season over a mile, most recently landing the Memories of Silver Stakes at Aqueduct to reach a speed figure of 92. She appears to be incredibly progressive, and makes a very strong case on this first attempt in graded company.

Sacred Wish could be a value angle, if she is able to get back to the same level as earlier in the season. She hit a mighty speed figure of 96 when landing a maiden special weight over six furlongs in March, but she could only finish second in the G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks on her latest start. That form also hasn’t been helped by the fact that the winner, Affirmative Lady, could only finish eleventh in the Kentucky Oaks.

Miracle would have been an interesting selection for Todd Pletcher, but connections have opted to bypass the Black Eyed Susan Stakes 2023. Comparative could be hard to overlook for last year’s winning trainer Brad Cox, but she has a lot to find on figures in this company.

Black Eyed Susan Stakes 2023 Picks

Faiza looks to be the top selection in this field, while Balpool could be the runner that pushes her closest. To complete our Trifecta Box, we will take a chance on Hoosier Philly. The Thomas Amoss runner was very consistent last year when winning the G2 Golden Rod, but she needs to get back to her best after hitting speed figures of 78 and 72 in the G2 Rachel Alexandra and G2 Fair Grounds Oaks, respectively.
