Breeders’ Cup Distaff Leading Contenders
There will be a wide-open feel to the G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff in 2025, with Bob Baffert-trained Seismic Beauty heading the betting. The four-year-old has impressively won on her last three starts, including most recently at Del Mar when beating Kopion by a length in the G1 Clement L Hirsch. However, Baffert is 0-20 in the Distaff.
Dorth Vader is a notable challenger in the race this year. The George Weaver five-year-old was only just touched off by the talented Thorpedo Anna in the G1 Persona Ensign at the end of August, and has been kept fresh for her challenge at Del Mar.
Three-year-old runners have a poor record in the Distaff, but Mark Casse-trained Nitrogen will take her chance this weekend. The three-year-old was narrowly beaten by the re-opposing Gin Gin in the G1 Spinster Stakes last time out, but she was electric before that defeat when seeing off Good Cheer to land the G1 Alabama.
Clicquot is a fascinating runner for the respected Brendan Walsh yard on Saturday. The three-year-old is incredibly progressive after winning on her last three starts. That includes a battling performance when holding off Dry Powder in the G1 Cotillion. Underestimated based on the current odds, and is capable of further improvement.
Breeders’ Cup Distaff Pick
I’m prepared to take a chance on one at a price in the Distaff this year. Scylla has run creditably in defeat throughout this season, including when third behind Gin Gin in the G1 Spinster at the start of October. That should get the selection primed for this test. She was fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint 12 months ago, but she could get her moment in the Californian spot-light on Saturday.
