Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Leading Contenders
An interesting renewal of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies is set for Del Mar this year. There doesn’t appear to be a notable standout contender based on the early odds, with Bob Baffert-trained Explora narrowly holding favouritism.
The two-year-old has won twice from three starts under rules, and was visibly impressive last time out when beating La Wally by four lengths in the G2 Oak Leaf Stakes. However, her lack of a win at the highest level would be a major concern when taking such a short price.
Bottle Of Rouge is also a runner from the Baffert yard toward the top of the betting. The two-year-old is unbeaten in two career starts, She will take a step up in trip at Del Mar, but she has winning form at the track after seeing off Explora to land the G1 Del Mar Futurity in September.
Percy’s Bar could be an overlooked contender for trainer Ben Colebrook. The two-year-old came up short when well beaten by Tommy Jo over seven furlongs, before closing the gap to win the G1 Alcibiades Stakes on track, before the decision was reversed. Improving, and is unlikely to be far away.
Iron Orchid landed the other major prep ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. The two-year-old for Danny Gargan showed excellent fight to land the Frizette Stakes, but there is a sense that he may find a couple too good at Del Mar despite his progressive and unbeaten status.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Pick
I’m a big fan of the Todd Pletcher-trained Tommy Jo, and she could be my best bet on the Friday at Del Mar. The two-year-old has done nothing wrong on track, winning on three previous starts, including last time out when awarded the G1 Alcibiades ahead of Percy’s Bar. Will be tuned up for Del Mar, and the trainer rarely gets it wrong with his fillies.
