Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Leading Contenders
As is typically the case with turf races during the Breeders’ Cup weekend, there will be a sizable European presence in the Juvenile Turf at Del Mar. It would be hard to overlook the favorite for Aidan O’Brien, as the Irish maestro chases a fourth straight victory in the race.
Gstaad has been consistent throughout the European season, finishing second in the G1 Prix Morny, and taking the runner-up spot in both of the G1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes and the G1 Dewhurst Stakes. Has form that ties in with the very best juveniles in Europe, and is more than capable of making his presence felt.
Puerto Rico is another runner from the O’Brien yard worth considering in the Juvenile Turf. The two-year-old was an excellent winner of the G1 Lagadere at Longchamp at the start of October. Will stay a mile with few issues, and looks to be the improving sort if bringing his A-game on faster ground.
Charlie Appleby will also have a runner in the Juvenile Turf. Wild Desert has already run with credit in North America this year, taking second over a mile at Woodbine in the G1 Summer Stakes. Is slightly less solid compared to the O’Brien duo on his European form.
Final Score is expected to be the leading American hope for the Todd Pletcher yard. He has won on each of his three starts on the turf, including most recently when landing the G2 Bourbon at Keeneland. Excels over further than a mile, meaning that his stamina could be an interesting angle.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Pick
The top two in the betting appear to be clear of the field on all available form. The fact that each of the last two winners of the Juvenile Turf has run in the G1 Lagadere makes Puerto Rico an interesting selection.
