Breeders’ Cup Mile Leading Contenders
An international field will go to post for this year’s edition of the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Cases can be made for many, with a few of the European raiders looking to get their careers back on track after defeats on their final prep start.
However, that isn’t the case for Charlie Appleby-trained Notable Speech. The four-year-old was a clear-cut winner of the G1 Woodbine Mile on his last start, and he has recorded victories in three of his ten attempts in stakes company. Connections typically enjoy success in this race, and he is the obvious angle on Saturday.
Sahlan is a notable French runner this weekend for Francis Graffard. The three-year-old saw off Rosallion in the G1 Prix du Moulin at Longchamp last month, and was also a winner on quick ground at Deauville in early August. Ground conditions should suit this raider.
Aidan O’Brien also has a runner this weekend. The Lion In Winter ran an excellent race at Ascot last time out to take second in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, and a return to that form should ensure that he has leading claims this weekend.
American hopes could hinge on Formidable Man. The Michael McCarthy-trained runner was an excellent winner over course and distance at the end of August when beating Almendares. However, this is a significant step up in opposition.
Jonquil has questions to answer, while Program Trading looks primed to run a big race for Chad Brown. Qirat caused one of the biggest upsets of the year in Europe earlier this season when landing the G1 Sussex Stakes at odds of 150/1.
Breeders’ Cup Mile Pick
Notable Speech should prove hard to beat this weekend, while The Lion In Winter could be a notable inclusion in Exotics. However, at the prices, Japanese raider Argine could be overlooked. The five-year-old mare has already shown her ability this year after winning the G3 Queen Stakes in Japan. A lightning-fast surface should play to her strengths, and she’s taken to out-run her odds.
