  • The Santa Anita Sprint Championship is a notable prep, producing three winners since 2017. Imagination won the prep race in 2025.
  • Three of the last five winners have been drawn in stall seven or higher.
  • Favorites have won just six of the last 20 editions of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Breeders’ Cup Sprint Leading Contenders

A thrilling edition of the G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint is set for Del Mar this weekend. Straight No Chaser is the defending champion for trainer Steven Asmussen. The four-year-old is yet to win in two starts since his trip to the Middle East, and was beaten more comfortably than the winning margin suggests by Imagination in the G2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship last time out. Has questions to answer.

Kopion had been the long-time favorite for this race. However, the Richard Mandella runner has drifted in the betting after drawing the plum spot in stall one. The four-year-old brings proven form to the table, winning at Santa Anita and Churchill Downs over seven furlongs already this year.

Betornato is the current favorite in the betting after catching the eye for the Jose Francisco D’Angelo yard on his comeback run when landing the Society Stakes by a dominant five-length margin at Churchill Downs. Has been targeted for this race since his second 12 months ago.

Dr. Venkman also deserves serious consideration. The Mark Glatt runner was ahead of Straight No Chaser, but behind Imagination, in the G2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship last time. The five-year-old has won twice from nine starts in stakes company, and was a winner over seven furlongs at Del Mar earlier this season in the G2 Pat O’Brien Stakes.

Breeders’ Cup Sprint Pick

A wide-open renewal of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint is set for Saturday. Based on the trends, Imagination could be the runner worth chancing. The speedy four-year-old looked at home when dropped back to six furlongs in the Santa Anita Championship, stylishly beating the talented re-opposing Dr. Venkman and Straight No Chaser. A repeat of that effort will see him go extremely close.
