Breeders’ Cup Turf Leading Contenders

A star-studded field of international runners will go to post for the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar. The early betting is headed by Aidan O’Brien’s Minnie Hauk, who could yet divert to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

The three-year-old was agonizingly close to a historic win in Paris at the start of October, finishing a head second by Daryz in the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. However, the gruelling nature of the race at Longchamp should be considered, despite the fact that the filly has won five from seven career starts.

Rebel’s Romance chases history at Del Mar, as the Charlie Appleby runner bids to become the first three-time winner of the race. The seven-year-old could be vulnerable against improvers, but he boasts an excellent Del Mar record and was sensational on his return to the U.S. last month when easily landing the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic.

Stablemate El Cordobes finished third in that race, but a better jockey booking could close that gap. The four-year-old is largely progressive, and has already won on American turf this season after landing the G1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga.

Wimbledon Hawkeye is another European raider with winning experience in the U.S. after landing the G3 Nashville Derby. The in-form James Owen yard deserves huge respect, but he has form to find on a number of reappearing rivals.

Goliath is a runner from the all-conquering Francis Graffard yard in France. The five-year-old produced a career-best effort last month to land Grade One success in Germany. A fast surface appears to suit this runner, but he could find a couple too good at Del Mar.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Pick

In my opinion, Minnie Hauk is one of the worst favorites at the Breeders’ Cup this year after such a hard race in the Arc. Godolphin pair Rebel’s Romance and El Cordobes are excellent Exotics angles.

However, Amiloc could be the overlooked contender for the Ralph Beckett team. He was well beaten over a mile and six at the Curragh last time, but produced a stunning effort before then to land the G2 King Edward VII Stakes. This three-year-old is still improving, and a fast surface over a mile and a half suits him down to the ground.
