Race Preview

Key prep race action ahead of the Breeders’ Cup will be held at Keeneland this weekend, as the Coolmore Turf Mile will be staged in Lexington. The winner of the race this weekend will secure their spot in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at the start of November.

Aidan O’Brien-trained Diego Velazquez sets a very high form standard, with Frankie Dettori taking the ride. The four-year-old was an excellent winner over a mile in Group One company in France last time out, beating proven performer Notable Speech by a head.

Woodshauna ensures that this is a high quality field, with the French raider having won three from five starts in stakes company. The colt will step up to a mile for the first time on Saturday after previously being campaigned up to seven furlongs in Europe.

Jonquil is another of the notable European raiders. The three-year-old for Andrew Balding was a winner over a mile on his latest start when scoring in the G2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood.

American hopes at Keeneland will likely hinge on Howard Wolowitz. The four-year-old steps up to a mile for the first time after finishing a close second behind Bear River over six furlongs in the G2 Kentucky Turf Sprint last time.

Coolmore Turf Mile Picks

A wide draw may not be ideal, but Jonquil has threatened to become a Grade One performer throughout the season in Europe. The Balding runner has run creditably over a mile this season, taking second in the French 2,000 Guineas before landing the spoils at Goodwood on his latest effort.
