Diana Stakes: Betting Preview
A high-quality field of seven fillies and mares will contest this year’s G1 Diana Stakes at Saratoga. It is a race that Chad Brown has dominated throughout history. The trainer will be chasing an eleventh victory overall, and a fifth straight success this weekend.
Brown saddles four runners this Saturday, including Portfolio Duration, who will have Manny Franco aboard. The four-year-old continued to show her quality last time when winning the G1 New York Stakes by a head. She had previously been held by a neck over an inadequate shorter distance by the talented Classic Q.
Kathrynmarissa represents the same stable, and Jose Ortiz keeps the faith. The five-year-old finished third in the G1 New York, but was always given an unlikely chance given that Portfolio Duration had the run of the race. She was previously excellent over course and distance on return, and easily held the very talented Gezora in the G3 Modesty Stakes at Churchill Downs. Every chance of reversing the G1 New York form.
Dynamic Pricing and Segesta round off the Brown contenders. The latter is clearly the most exciting. The five-year-old wasn’t beaten far by Classic Q when a length behind the winner in the G1 Just A Game. Has already won this season after beating Expensive Queen in the G1 Jenny Wiley. However, she is winless in two trips to Saratoga.
If there is a potential horse to upset the Brown party this weekend, then it could be Cathedral. The British raider for Kevin Philippart De Foy was last seen running a big race at Royal Ascot when seventh behind Blue Bolt. Is yet to win in nine starts under rules, but her best career effort did come on U.S. turf when fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
Diana Stakes Picks
This is a fascinating renewal of the Diana Stakes, and cases can be made for as many as five runners. However, Kathrynmarissa still looks like the one to beat. She was an unlucky loser in the G1 New York when given far too much to do. Her form before that effort reads very well, and a more forward ride will make her hard to beat this weekend.
