Race Preview

A high-quality weekend of horse racing action is set, with the Belmont Stakes headlining the action Stateside. However, the most important Classics of the British season will also be staged on Friday and Saturday, kicking off with the G1 Epsom Oaks on Friday.

Amelia Earhart is a red-hot favorite for the Aidan O’Brien team. The three-year-old by Camelot made a dominant return to action this year, winning the Cheshire Oaks by two lengths from I’m The One. That looks like very solid form, and that race has been a standout event for producing the winner of the Oaks.

British success in the Oaks and Derby has been rare in recent years, but Legacy Link could change that trend. The John & Thady Gosden-trained runner was fourth behind Precise in the G1 Fillies’ Mile as a juvenile, but she looked much more capable over further based on her return effort at York when beating Felicitas by just under a length in the G3 Musidora Stakes.

Joseph O’Brien is a master when aiming his horses at the right races to get fitness. Therefore, Thundering On should be respected. The three-year-old filly by Frankel was narrowly beaten on return, before stepping up to produce a career-best effort to land the G3 Salsabil Stakes at Navan at the end of April.

Precise and Cameo could yet run in the Oaks on Friday for Aidan O’Brien, with the latter likely to be of the most interest based on her breeding. Venetian Lace should also be respected after staying on excellently to finish third in the G1 1,000 Guineas. That form looks rock-solid with two subsequent winners already giving that run a green flag.

Epsom Oaks Picks

Aidan O’Brien’s dominant record in Classics makes it hard to overlook his contenders. But, K Sarra could be an improving filly for the Ralph Beckett yard. She made a pleasing late impression at York last time, cutting away at Legacy Link’s advantage in the Musidora to finish two lengths behind the winner. She looks like a stronger stayer, and the Oaks could be perfect for her to piece together a solid run.
