Flower Bowl Stakes: Betting Preview
An exciting renewal of the Flower Bowl Stakes is set for Belmont Park on Saturday, with a field of eleven runners set to take their chance. This weekend’s race serves as a ‘Win and You’re In’ for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, with last year’s champion Gezora among the entries for the race in New York this weekend.
Gezora (Junior Alvarado/William Mott) has been slightly disappointing since winning the Filly & Mare Turf last year, having failed to win in three starts. Her run in the G2 Glens Falls last time was extremely concerning, as she faded to finish sixth, beaten over six lengths by Survie. A return to form is required.
Kathrynmarissa (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) could be the most progressive contender in this field. She was excellent when winning the G1 Diana Stakes at Saratoga in July, reversing the form with Portfolio Duration emphatically. She already has winning form over Gezora after landing the G3 Modesty in May.
Esna (Jamie Spencer/Brian Meehan) is a very interesting European raider this Saturday. The three-year-old has finished second in both the G3 Valiant Stakes and G3 Prix de Lieurey in Europe. However, this step up in distance raises questions, having previously finished a well-beaten eleventh in the G1 Prix de Diane.
Sunlit Uplands (James Doyle/Stuart Williams) is another European raider. The four-year-old was only narrowly denied on U.S. debut at Saratoga in August, beaten a neck by And One More Time in the G2 Ballston Spa. A step up in trip should suit her chances on the quicker ground expected this weekend.
Flower Bowl Stakes Picks
Kathrynmarissa looks capable of enhancing her claims for the Breeders’ Cup this weekend, as she is clearly the best female turf horse in the U.S. Her run at Saratoga in July makes her the standout star, especially against European raiders that have plenty to find on figures. Storm Miami could be an interesting selection to follow her home, having run well on back-to-back starts at the Spa when finishing runner-up in the G3 Waya and G2 Glens Falls.
