Fourstardave Stakes: Betting Preview
A very competitive renewal of the G1 Fourstardave Stakes is set for Saratoga this weekend, with a field of seven runners set to collide over a mile for their share of the $750,000 purse and a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Deterministic is the obvious starting point, as the defending champion for Miguel Clement. The five-year-old has been excellent on back-to-back starts this season over slightly further than a mile, including a narrow win over Test Score in the G1 Manhattan Stakes. The drop back down in distance isn’t an issue, and he boasts three-race winning sequence at the Spa.
Steven Asmussen and Jose Ortiz join forces with Lagynos this weekend. The five-year-old will need to contend with the widest draw, but confidence surrounding his chances will be high after three straight graded wins in 2026, including a recent narrow success in the G2 Wise Dan. May not be as suited to the drop back down to a mile, and he was well beaten when seventh in the Fourstardave last year.
Rhetorical is a horse that I have always liked, but he is becoming extremely frustrating. He was fourth in the G1 Manhattan Stakes last time, but does have winning form on the turf this season after impressively landing the G1 Turf Classic Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Zulu Kingdom holds a form edge over Rhetorical after beating his re-appearing rival by a comfortable length over a mile in the G1 Maker’s Mark Mile. Classic Q and Mi Bago also come into the weekend after back-to-back wins, and both could be open to further improvement in Grade One company.
Fourstardave Stakes Picks
Mi Bago, Zulu Kingdom, and Classic Q are the three-horse shortlist for the Fourstardave Stakes.
However, the win play is for the overpriced Classic Q. The Mark Casse runner was excellent over course and distance when landing the G1 Just A Game Stakes, and she was an impressive winner of the G2 Distaff Turf Mile Stakes in May.
That form has been well advertised since, with Portfolio Duration landing the G1 New York Stakes and finishing a fine third in the G1 Diana.
