Race Preview

The eyes of the racing world will be on Aintree this Saturday, as the world-famous Grand National is staged in Liverpool. An ever-competitive edition of the race is set, with the weights headed by previous victors Nick Rockett and I Am Maximus.

The latter heads the betting, but historical trends will go against the ten-year-old, as no horse has won off top weight or regained the National since Red Rum. Returning losers from a previous National also have a poor record, which could be damning to horses such as Iroko and Grangeclare West.

Rebecca Curtis-trained Haiti Couleurs should be respected after winning the Irish and Welsh Grand Nationals, indicating that stamina is no issue. However, a heavy weight of 11-10 is a negative, especially considering his poor showing in the G1 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Corach Rambler used the Ultima Handicap Chase as a stepping stone to the National, and recent winner Johnnywho should be competitive from a light weight for the Jonjo & AJ O’Neill yard. However, stamina questions remain after fading in the closing stages at Cheltenham.

Panic Attack should be respected for the dominant Dan Skelton yard, but mares have a weak record in the race. Stellar Story is an interesting contender after finishing third in the G3 Bobbyjo Chase, which has produced the last two winners of the National.

Grand National Picks

A typically competitive renewal of the Grand National sees many runners have leading claims. Jagwar is an outstanding chance now stepped up in trip after staying on for second in the recent Ultima Handicap Chase. Meanwhile, Oscars Brother is a fascinating first-season chaser worth considering due to the fact that he ticks every trend box.
