Race Preview

The graded stakes action at Santa Anita this weekend comes in the form of the G3 La Canada Stakes. This race was first staged in 1975, and it has been run over 1 1/16 miles since being decreased in distance in 2012. It has been a Grade 3 context since 2019 after previously being run as a Grade 2 between 1977 and 2018.

There have been some standout winners of the race throughout history, including Chris Evert, who won over the 1 1/16 mile distance in a staggering 1:41.60. The speed record is held by Bob Baffert-trained As Time Goes By, who landed victory by a staggering 13 Ā½ lengths in 2022.

Baffert could have the most likely winner once again this weekend, as Midnight Memories looks very solid based on previous runs. She was last seen over 1 1/16 miles in the middle of December, racing clear of the field to land the G3 Bayakoa Stakes at Laurel Park, beating Desert Dawn in the process. This is her preferred trip after also landing the G2 Zenyatta Stakes over course and distance in 2022.

Signorina Merisi could be one of the runners overlooked this weekend, as the five-year-old for trainer Manuel Badilla comes into the weekend in excellent form. She was last seen winning the Miss America Stakes over 1 1/16 miles, but she must transfer that form to the dirt on Saturday. Musical Mischief also returns to the dirt after finishing third on the turf on her previous start, and she could hold very strong claims if transferring her form from the G1 American Oaks.

La Canada Stakes Prediction

The two runners at the top of the weights make the most appeal this weekend, but it appears challenging to overlook Midnight Memories maintaining her advantage over Desert Dawn.
