Indiana Derby: Betting Preview
As is typically the case, the Indiana Derby looks set to be an interesting renewal in 2026. A field of nine horses will line-up in the gates, with many of the top contenders having something to prove.
Bob Baffert’s excellent record in the race ensures that Desert Gate should be respected. The three-year-old showed signs as a juvenile of being special, taking second in consecutive Grade Ones such as the Del Mar Futurity and American Pharoah. However, despite impressively winning the Texas Derby in May, he will have questions to answer this weekend following a fourth-place finish in the G3 Ohio Derby.
Philip D’Amato’s Out Of The Woods is a very interesting contender after winning twice from five starts this term. The Constitution colt showed an excellent finishing effort when second in the Delaware Derby, and has twice clocked excellent speed figures when winning at Oaklawn and Churchill Downs since the start of April.
Brad Cox and Irad Ortiz join forces with Leading Change this weekend. The Gun Runner colt could be absolutely anything at this stage, but it was hard not to have been impressed by his maiden win at Churchill Downs last month. He’s well worth a go in this company.
Bricklin has been somewhat of a frustrating horse for the yard, and he will need to get his career back on track to feature this weekend. Creole Chrome is more than capable of fighting for places. Meanwhile, Our Moneyman could be interesting after his second in the G3 Matt Winn Stakes last month.
Indiana Derby Picks
At a big price, Zihnal could be a fascinating contender for the Jonathan Thomas and Umberto Rispoli combination this weekend. Nothing went to plan for the Quality Road colt when ninth at Churchill Downs in May, but his speed figures have largely been consistent. Previous winning form at Horseshoe is also a major plus, clocking an Equibase rating of 89 last month. Could be overpriced in a wide-open race.
