The next Classic on the European calendar is set for the Curragh this weekend, as a talented crop of fillies aged three will go to post for the G1 Irish Oaks. A legendary roll of honor includes names such as Alexandrova, Minnie Hauk, and Enable, but it is unsurprisingly a race dominated by Aidan O’Brien. You can find the odds and our picks for the Irish Oaks here.

Irish Oaks: Betting Preview

A competitive renewal of the Irish Oaks is set for this weekend, with a high-quality crop of fillies set to go to post at the Curragh. However, the unpredictability of the form lines in this division this season ensures that plenty have questions to answer.

Earth Shot could be a hot favorite for the William Haggas yard, with the Time Test filly making a very pleasing impression on her first attempt over a mile and four at Royal Ascot. She landed the G2 Ribblesdale Stakes by a head from the re-opposing Johanna Walsh. Earlier in the season, he was a head behind Inir Mor in the Listed Height of Fashion Stakes, who once again takes her on.

Thundering On looked like a potential superstar in the G1 Oaks at the start of June, easily putting three lengths between herself and Legacy Link. However, she looked unsuited by quicker ground at the Curragh last time, finishing fourth and two lengths behind Estrange in the G1 Pretty Polly. The step back up in trip is notable.

Amelia Earhart could be Aidan O’Brien’s leading chance this weekend. She was sent off as the favorite for the Oaks in June, but could only finish sixth and was never comfortable. Prior to that, she made a striking impression at Chester when landing the Cheshire Oaks.

Johanna Walsh and Inir Mor are notable angles that have close form lines with Earth Short, but the latter looks more exposed than most after finishing third in the G1 Prix de Diane. Unbeaten filly Rebel Moon gives Joseph O’Brien a strong hand, while Sparan Nua could still be improving after recently landing the G3 Munster Oaks.

Irish Oaks Picks

I was a massive fan of Thundering On before the British Oaks, and she was an excellent winner. I’d be prepared to forgive her latest effort, as she will be a different animal back up in trip this weekend. I expect her to resume her progress and prove her staying ability over a mile and four.
