Race Preview

A festive treat of racing is set for Santa Anita Park on December 28, beginning with the G1 La Brea Stakes over seven furlongs for fillies. Bob Baffert holds the dominant record in the race, winning on nine occasions since 1992.

His leading chance of a tenth win in the race comes in the form of Silent Law. The three-year-old will have Joel Rosario aboard this weekend, but she is yet to win in four starts in 2025. She was last seen finishing an encouraging second in the G2 Chillingworth, but more will be needed this weekend.

Magnificat is a very strong contender for the Richard Mandella stable. The filly has won on each of her two starts, including most recently in striking fashion at Del Mar to achieve an Equibase speed figure of 98. Steps into graded company, but there’s plenty to like.

Formula Rossa could be one selection that outruns her odds this weekend. The Mark Glatt runner was an excellent second in the G3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap in August, and she goes well fresh based on her comeback run at the start of the same month following a six-month break.

La Brea Stakes Picks

Five G looks like the standout contender for the combination of George Weaver and Irad Ortiz Jr. The three-year-old has enjoyed a stellar year on track, winning the G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks in March. Returns following a break, and she could be set to scoop up a few big purses in the early months of 2026.
