Race Preview
One of the first big prizes of the calendar year on the racing schedule is set for Gulfstream Park on Saturday, as the G1 Pegasus World Cup will be staged. A talented field of 12 will go to post, but this is arguably one of the weakest renewals of the race in recent history.
White Abarrio is the defending champion for Saffie Joseph, having won impressively by a six-length margin 12 months ago. The seven-year-old still has passion for the game, but looked to be just below the top level in the middle part of last season after being well beaten by Sierra Leone and Antiquarian in the G1 Whitney and G1 Jockey Club, respectively.
Disco Time could be one of the more exciting newcomers to the division this season, and the Brad Cox runner will be aiming to defend his stellar record under rules. The four-year-old continued to show improvement at the end of last year when beating Crudo by nine lengths in the Dwyer Stakes.
Madaket Road is one of the more frustrating horses to get a handle on. The four-year-old for Bob Baffert has been somewhat of a serial loser at the highest level, most recently finishing no better than fourth in the G1 Malibu Stakes. This step up in trip is a plus.
Full Serrano and Skippylongstocking are two old favorites at the highest level. The former failed to successfully defend his G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile title at Del Mar in November, but this looks like a good starting point back to the same target.
Skippylongstocking is a standout Exotics angle, having finished in the top-three in 18 of his 28 stakes starts. Looked back to his very best last time over an extended mile at Gulfstream when beating Poster by a head.
Pegasus World Cup Picks
White Abarrio and Skippylongstocking are standout Exotics picks this weekend, while Disco Time may place on his first effort in this company. However, Tappan Street could be the win play.
The Brad Cox runner excelled at Gulfstream Park at the start of last season, beating Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty over couse and distance in the G1 Florida Derby. Returned to action with an excellent win over an inadequate mile. Major chance, and provides value in the betting.
