Race Preview

The Commonwealth Cup is one of two graded stakes races on Friday, and is due off at 11:20 a.m. ET. This race is run by horses aged three, with a total distance of six furlongs being completed. The race was won by American trainer Wesley Ward in 2021, but there is an expectancy that Aidan O’Brien holds the leading chance in 2023.

Little Big Bear is clear on official ratings, as the three-year-old boasts an official rating of 124, meaning that the majority of the field have ten lbs to find on the favorite. The O’Brien runner bounce back from a disappointing outing in the G1 2,000 Guineas with a strong showing at Haydock in the G2 Sandy Lane, beating Shouldvebeenaring by nearly two lengths.

Little Big Bear is the best runner over this distance, having won five times over distances ranging from five and six furlongs. He was also a handy winner of the Windsor Castle Stakes at the Royal meet last year. Shouldvebeenaring could be the value angle after winning at Newmarket in early May before finishing second to the selection at Haydock.

Race Preview

The Coronation Stakes is the second of the Group 1 races at Royal Ascot on Friday, with this race for fillies aged three due off at 12:00 p.m. ET. There will be a fascinating rematch from the G1 1,000 Guineas, with Mawj looking to prove her classic success was no fluke. The mount for Oisin Murphy was excellent at Newmarket, but she had the added benefit of being race fit for that opening showdown with Tahiyra.

Since that defeat, Tahiyra has returned to winning ways in dominant fashion, landing the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas by over a length from Meditate. She was excellent on that day at the Curragh, and we fully expect the Dermot Weld runner to reverse the form on Friday.

At a price, I’m keen on the chances of Remarquee to finish in the first two. Nothing went right for the three-year-old in the G1 1,000 Guineas, but she showed excellent form before that appearance, including a strong-finishing effort to land the G3 Fred Darling over seven furlongs at Newbury.
