Saratoga Derby: Betting Preview
Potential clues ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Turf could be on offer this weekend, as a high-quality field go to post for the G1 Saratoga Derby, which is run over a distance of 1 3/16 miles. Interestingly, a place in the G1 W. S. Cox Plate will also be awarded to this weekend’s winner.
European raiders dominate the early betting, with Simon & Ed Crisford-trained Title Role likely to be hard to beat. The three-year-old has won four from seven starts on the turf, and was excellent on his U.S. debut last month when holding off West End Kid to land the G1 Belmont Derby.
The runner-up looked unsuited by the run of the race that day, and could be set for a renewed effort on these terms. Bottas (finished 5th) should also be more competitive on Saturday after encountering traffic when making his challenge last time out.
Charlie Appleby also has a runner this weekend, with Irad Ortiz booked aboard Pacific Avenue. The three-year-old could only finish seventh in the G1 Belmont Derby and has also finished behind the same rival in the Middle East this term. Is yet to win in six starts in stakes company, and he could be better suited to a mile.
Glavine and Glacius should also be interesting contenders this weekend. The latter is most interesting for the Hugo Palmer yard, with Luis Saez booked aboard. He was last seen finishing a close third in the Listed Gala Stakes on his second attempt over a mile and two at Sandown.
Saratoga Derby Picks
Plenty of runners have leading chances in the Saratoga Derby, but a chance is taken on Cherie DeVaux’s Remember Mamba. The three-year-old was favorite for the Belmont Derby last month, but he never got a clear run and was beaten a neck. Looks more than capable of making a mark over this distance, and is well worth another chance with Jose Ortiz keeping the faith.
