Race Preview

World-class horse racing action is set for Saudi Arabia this weekend, as a $20 million purse has attracted runners from across the globe. A distance of 1,800 metres will be covered in the Saudi Cup, and Forever Young is firmly favored to retain his title.

The Japanese superstar has been one of the best horses in training throughout his career, and he finally delivered on the grandest stage at the end of last year when besting Sierra Leone and Fierceness to land the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Goes well at this track, as he chases a historic second win in the Saudi Cup.

Nysos is another Breeders’ Cup winner that will take his chance in the race this Saturday. The Bob Baffert runner has shown stamina to land victories on his last two starts, which includes a win in the Dirt Mile. His staying ability will be tested to its fullest in this company.

Nevada Beach was only narrowly denied by Nysos in graded company on his latest start, and could be a major player if bringing his A-Game to Saudi Arabia. Brad Cox is also represented, but Bishops Bay will need to step up on what he has shown to this point in his career, which could be challenging for the exposed six-year-old.

Saudi Cup Picks

Forever Young is the star attraction this weekend, but Japanese-trained Luxor Café could provide the value in the betting.

The three-year-old looked like a standout Kentucky Derby contender last year after excellent wins in Japan over 1 1/8 miles, but he failed to fire at Churchill Downs. Bounced back from that disappointment with a win in graded company back on home dirt.

Best to forgive his latest effort when running below form, but if back to his very best, he could be the notable Japanese raider in big Grade Ones over the Classic distance throughout this season.
