Sussex Stakes: Betting Preview
The feature on Day Two of Glorious Goodwood comes over a mile, as the G1 Sussex Stakes is due off at 11:10 AM ET. Some of the most talented milers have won this prestigious race throughout history, including the legendary Frankel and Breeders’ Cup champion Notable Speech.
However, on Wednesday it will be all about the highly-regarded Bow Echo. The three-year-old has been the outstanding horse in the division this season, maintaining his unbeaten record with wins in the G1 2,000 Guineas and G1 St. James’s Palace Stakes.
Bow Echo once again clashes with Gstaad, who got closer to the George Boughey horse at Royal Ascot last time. However, the Ascot track suited the Aidan O’Brien runner more so, and Bow Echo was forced to go wide coming into the home stretch.
Charlie Appleby’s Opera Ballo will be a popular alternative, despite conceding weight to the three-year-old horses. The progressive four-year-old won the G2 bet365 Mile in April, before being beaten in the final strides by the re-opposing Ten Bob Tony in the G1 Queen Anne at Royal Ascot.
Zavateri is a fascinating contender on his first start over a mile, and he holds winning juvenile form over Gstaad at Group One level. Never So Brave also takes his chance over a mile once again, but the Andrew Balding runner has plenty of form to find on Opera Ballo after finishing eight lengths behind his rival at Sandown in April.
Sussex Stakes Picks
Bow Echo looks like the horse to beat in the Sussex Stakes. The three-year-old has looked world class over a mile this season, and his unbeaten record remain in tact. Crucially, he gets weight against his elders for the first time, and he looks more than capable of confirming the form with long-time rival Gstaad.
