Preview
Toronto has slid all the way into last place in a competitive AL East division, after having gone 2-9 over the last two weeks. That entire span came against divisional opponents, after the Blue Jays had no trouble sweeping the Braves. The difficulty of the AL East has certainly made a difference, as they have gone 6-15 in the division, but 20-10 against all other opponents. They have a good chance to rebound in this series.
The Twins have also struggled lately, going 2-5 over the past week. Despite their inconsistency, they remain in 1st in an abysmal AL Central. Minnesota may be able to win that division with a .500 record, but is obviously aiming for something much better than that. They need their offense to produce like they did in the win against the Giants on Wednesday, and not in the 3 games prior, where they scored just 6 runs.
Prediction
Both of these teams have been losing consistently as of late, making it hard to feel confident picking either team to win. That being said, the Twins have the home-field advantage in this game, and surprisingly favorable odds, making this bet worthwhile. They’ll need a strong start from Louie Varland (4.18 ERA) in order to defeat Toronto’s Kevin Gausman (3.14 ERA). I see the Twins getting it done and picking up the win.
