Game Preview

The Cardinal (20-12) had a solid campaign but suffered an early exit from the ACC Tournament after losing to Pittsburgh. They make their 29th postseason appearance in program history, and their first in the second season of the College Basketball Crown. Ebuka Okorie ranks eighth in the country in scoring at 22.8 points per game and third among freshmen, behind only BYU’s AJ Dybantsa and Arkansas’ Darius Acuff Jr., and he leads the ACC in scoring, just above Duke’s Cameron Boozer. Okorie was named an honorable mention AP All-American as well as to the All-ACC first team, ACC All-Rookie team and NABC All-Division first team.

The Mountaineers (18-14) fell short of being in the mix for March Madness, losing to BYU in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament. Honor Huff leads the offense with averages of 15.8 points and 2.3 rebounds per game while making 109 3-pointers and counting on a 35.4% clip from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Brenen Lorient follows suit with a stat line of 11.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest.

Stanford vs West Virginia Head-to-Head

The two programs have had one meeting in their history, last occurring in December 1959. West Virginia was victorious in that encounter, beating Stanford by a 66-47 score.

Stanford vs West Virginia Predictions

The winner of Thursday’s second-round matchup will face Rutgers or Creighton in the semifinals on April 4. West Virginia has the talent to make this game a close one, especially if Honor Huff puts together an efficient shooting night from the field and Brenen Lorient is active inside the paint. However, the Mountaineers’ defense will have their hands full taking on one of the best NBA prospects in Ebuka Okorie, who would be on pace for a big performance as Stanford’s undisputed star. Our betting pick here is the Cardinal to defend a 1.5-point spread.
