  • BYU took down Texas Tech without much trouble, winning 27-14.
  • Texas won a dangerously close game at Houston, by a score of 31-24.
  • These two teams last met on September 6, 2014, in a game BYU won 41-7.

The college football season is past the midway point. Let’s preview the upcoming BYU vs Texas matchup. Texas remains in CFP contention with one loss, but they need to start winning in a more confident manner.

How to Watch

  • ABC

BYU bounced back from their brutal 44-11 loss to TCU last week, defeating Texas Tech and improving to 5-2. They jumped out to a 24-7 lead in the first half, and stayed in command for the rest of the game. The Cougars are now just one game away from bowl eligibility, but will certainly have bigger things on their mind this week with a trip to #7 Texas. They need their defense to be firing on all cylinders to have a shot.

Texas won a surprisingly close game against Houston last week, getting back in the win column after their loss to Oklahoma in the game prior. The Longhorns still have a solid chance to make the CFP if they win out, with a road win at Alabama boosting their rรฉsumรฉ. They have no ranked opponents remaining, so a loss would basically eliminate them. While playing for the committee’s eye test, Texas will be tough to beat.

BYU is a tough team to pin down. They’ve won a few tough matchups quite confidently, but also looked very underwhelming in their losses. The 82 points they gave up against Kansas and TCU is a big concern going into a matchup against a stellar Texas offense. I would be pretty surprised if the Cougars pulled off the upset on the road here. I’ll take the Longhorns to win this one pretty easily, and cover the spread too.
