  • The Chiefs lost a tight 21-20 game against the Lions in week 1.
  • The Jaguars defeated the Colts 31-21 on Sunday.
  • These teams last met in the 2022 postseason with the Chiefs winning 20-27.

The Chiefs were disappointing in their loss to the Lions in week 1 but could have some key players back for this matchup. The Jaguars rallied in the 4th quarter to defeat the Colts in their season opener and will be looking to add another victory here.

Game Preview

With RDT Chris Jones bringing his contract holdout to an end this week and Travis Kelce back in practice (albeit limited) there are reasons to be cheerful for Chiefs fans heading into this matchup. Against Detroit, it was evident that Mahomes needs his number one target man on the field if Kansas City is to make another Superbowl run this season. None of the receivers asked to fill those vacated targets did anything to suggest they can step up when required and that is a worry for the Chiefs.

The last time Jaguars WR Calvin Ridley stepped onto an NFL field was as a Falcon in 2021, following his suspension and subsequent move to Jacksonville it was like he’d never been away. With 8 receptions for 101 yards and one score and sporting the newly allowed #0 shirt Ridley reminded us all of his precocious talent. Further touchdowns from Zay Jones, Travis Etienne, and rookie Tank Bigsby ensured the Jaguars began the season with a win and they look like a side capable of testing the Chiefs in week 2.

Prediction

The result of this matchup could rest largely in the fitness of Travis Kelce. If the star TE takes the field and is not on a snap count, then Patrick Mahomes may have the weapons to see off the Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence can never be counted out though, the talented young QB is growing into the NFL more and more with every game and something tells me he could pick up a real statement victory here.
