Match Preview
Mike Sullivan’s New York Rangers will be on the road for the first time in the NHL this season on Thursday when they travel to Buffalo. The franchise will have questions to answer following a disappointing 3-0 loss on the opening night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
New York fell behind in the opening period, before allowing two further goals in the final period. The Rangers struggled to get going in the offensive areas of the ice, and there appears to be a lack of fluency at this early stage of the season. Despite that, Igor Shesterkin looked solid in the Rangers goal, making 27 saves from 28 shots.
The Buffalo Sabres will come into this opening game of the season well-rested, as they will be taking to the ice for the first time in 2025-26. Lindy Ruff’s side endured a poor campaign in 2024-25, finishing 14th in the Eastern Conference, and missing out on the playoffs for the 14th straight season.
Another testing season could be on the horizon, especially considering their poor defensive record throughout pre-season. Their defensive concerns have been reflected after allowing eleven goals across their last three games.
Rangers vs. Sabres Picks
A response will be expected by the Rangers this week after their poor display on home ice against the Penguins. We could foresee them getting back on track against a defensively weak opponent this Thursday.
