Match Preview

Despite losing the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Tottenham, Liverpool remain the strong favorites to reach the final. Spurs were excellent in their home match against the Reds at the start of last month, with their only effort being netted by Lucas Bergvall in the final five minutes.

However, it would be a concern for Tottenham that Liverpool have progressed to the final in two of their last three semi-finals in which they have lost the opening leg. They previously achieved that feat against Sheffield United in 2002-03.

Tottenham’s record after winning the opening leg of a last four showdown is also concerning. Spurs have been eliminated in three of their last five semi-finals after gaining a first leg advantage. In fact, no side has suffered more defeats in the competition after winning the first showdown at this stage.

Liverpool’s overall home record against Tottenham is also incredibly hard to overlook. The Reds have suffered just one defeat in their last 27 at Anfield against Spurs. The only win for Tottenham was recorded in May 2011.

Meanwhile, Spurs could make history this week by recording two wins over Liverpool in the same season for the first time since 2010-11. However, the Reds are unbeaten in their last nine home matches in the EFL Cup, scoring 15 goals and conceding just four over that period.

Liverpool vs. Tottenham Picks

Liverpool’s excellent record against Tottenham is a major concern ahead of this showdown on Thursday. We expect Spurs to be competitive at Anfield, but defensive injuries could once again play their role in their downfall.
